I'm not an Optimist, Pessimist or a Realist...

Two weeks today I moved to New York City. So basically it's safe to say that my life has been nicely flipped upside down these past few weeks...and to be honest the move itself has not been the half of it. It's because of all these changes I've been asking myself lately, "What am I?" (I mean, every beauty pageant queen and business development professional alike knows that your 10 second elevator pitch is critical because you never get to make a second 'first impression'. :)

I have always liked to view myself as an eternal optimist but there are always thing that happens which provides a strong dose of realism. I've never really been a pessimist per say, but sometimes those hard moments have made the question sincerity, intentions and motives. But I honestly feel like I have learned more in these past four weeks about myself than I have in quite some time. And because of that I think it's pretty clear that I am above all else an opportunist. Here's why...

The older I get, the easier bigger decisions are for me to make.

Moving to New York was an easy decision for me. That is intended to be no disrespect to my Atlanta office, my friends and colleagues in Atlanta or the city for that matter. (Which I don't think anyone will considering no one was surprised...to my surprise....that I was going :) I love Atlanta and I always will. It just was not rich with the kind of opportunities that were right for me. And rather than continuing to operate under those limitations I decided to take charge and do something about it.

When you least expect it good things will come to you...
you just have to be ready to work hard to hold onto them.

I am lucky enough to be working on a project that to be perfectly candid, could have waited a lifetime for someplace else. I also have realized as soon as you say I am going to focus on 'x' something else comes out of nowhere that you simply can not ignore. And that to me is the true test of someones abilities, priorities and strengths. It's how you handle when things don't go as planned that is a true test of someones character.

So with all that being said, I would encourage a little self reflection from time to time as you transition and change whether it be from semester to semester, school or work or job to job. But don't think too much...you might miss a very important opportunity! :)

Resume Round Up! 10 Tips You Have NOT Heard Yet!

With the IIDA Georgia Student Portfolio Reviews in Atlanta & Savannah this weekend, I wanted take a break from tracking trends and offer some advice for all those working on landing their dream internships and summer jobs this year!

Below are ten things that any student or young professional should consider when preparing their packages for potential employers. But remember, nothing beats a good professional critique! If you’re in Atlanta and Savannah this weekend be sure to check out the IIDA Georgia Student Portfolio Review! I will be in Atlanta at SCAD reviewing and offering advice and sharing my experiences as a young professional along with other professionals.

1. Did you know resumes are often the VERY FIRST impression?! At a large firm it’s common practice to look a resume TO DECIDE whether or not to look at your portfolio. Food for thought!

2. Black & white versus color. I’ve seen a lot of beautiful palettes on resumes however, they are rarely (if ever) printed in color when they are printed and reviewed. Be aware of this because low contrasting colors or copy in a light gray does not translate well.

3. Include an objective ONLY if it is unique. I’m personally, not a huge of objectives, especially for students and recent graduates. Typically, everyone says the same thing and no one has a unique professional perspective to share yet in a sentence or two. I would recommend saving that for your cover letter and utilizing your precious real estate on a resume for your extracurricular.

4. Don’t force it. “It” is referring to a layout. If you have a square portfolio, don’t feel obligated to make your resume square. Use type, color and layout to create an entire package and don’t get caught up on things that just make your life difficult.

5. Create hierarchy. You’re name and contact information should be clear and legible on the page. If you are a student include your permanent and temporary addresses. For another important note about addresses check out my post Cover Letters for Go Getters #3!

6. Extracurricular are no longer “extra”. I’m going to be honest, I would personally hire someone who has great work with leadership experience than someone with amazing work and was never involved in their school or community. The fact you have studio is a b.s. excuse.

7. CAUTION! High risk of over design! Your resume is one page (yes, only one page…) so things can get mucked up pretty quick. For typography, good practice is typically selecting either a sans serif typeface for headers paired with a serif typeface for body copy. Or choose a typeface that has a large typography family so you can utilize extra light, light, book and bold to create hierarchy without introducing multiple typefaces. When in doubt remember that simpler is typically better.

8. Don’t include references on you’re resume. Simply put, “Available upon request.” Again, use your valuable real estate for something else!

9. No photos please! Save your comp card for your modeling portfolio. That goes the same for your personal stats. Since you’re not a professional athlete so we need your height, weight and collar sizes.

10. Refrain from using the third person! You’re resume (and cover letter) is YOUR perspective and it’s kind of creepy. Have a voice and show your personality!

Top 10 Things I'm Thankful For in 2011!

I had a temporary lapse of judgment in the past and become a blonde and I am proud in 2011 to have stayed the way I was intended. :)

#9 Basketball
Basketball has brought so many good things, people and experiences into my life. The trips for the Final Four cheering on my wildcats, watching John Wall with the Wizards and just heading downstairs to the sports bar below my condo are all things irreplaceable!

Watching DanceBlue grow strong and evolve after six years is tremendous. I'm always and forever FTK!

With only two classes left to wrap up my graduate degree in graphic design, needless to say I am thankful for almost being done!

I am blessed to work alongside talented professions, have an amazing family and designers/ architects who have set the bar like Diane Von Frustenburg, Paula Schuler and Art Gensler.

Tangerine Tango Take 2! For Your Home!

In my humble opinion, orange is the perfect accent color for fashion and at home. I searched high and low for the most unique and beautiful tangerine tango products on the market to celebrate the Pantone 2012 Color of the Year. Right now, that red base that makes tangerine tango such a unique shade of orange is a bit hard to find. However in a few months it will be all the rage at mainstream shops like CB2, Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie.

Tangerine Tango Take 1! Pantone's Color of the Year on the Runway

Considering I carry my signature orange purse 95% of the time, it should be no surprise that I am thrilled with Pantone's 2012 Color of the Year, Tangerine Tango!

Of course, we had some clear since the red based orange was all over the Resort and Spring/Summer Runways. It's richer than the nude and blush orange/pinks we've seen and adds a sophisticated balance to neons that are splashed all over the market.

Night Owl INSPIRATION!

So it's week 8 in school out of our 10 week quarter, so needless to say my posts typically slow down during this time in the semester. But I could not help but be inspired by the images below.

Like many designers I do my best work at night. This may be my biggest misfit with the corporate world but I've learned to cope with coffee. Regardless, these are kind reminders to us designers slaving over our computers in the wee hours of the morning that other people are kicking ass and taking names in their own right. We all know, even when your surrounded by people in studio you feel 1,000 miles away from the rest of the world. Here are some cool ad campaigns to remind you that you're note alone. :)

New meaning to "Run This Town Tonight"

In a call to arms (and legs), Nike organized running clubs and nighttime events for jogging fanatics everywhere from Paris and New York to Milan and Copenhagen. Felix Larher photographed participants for its “Run Unleashed” campaign, showing Nike-clad racers tackling the urban hurdles and running without limits.

Photographed by Aaron Farley, the Puma Social campaign for F/W 10 is dedicated to the “After-Hours Athlete.” From bowling and foosball to billiards and ping-pong, Puma gives words of wisdom to night owls such as, “Bacon has electrolytes, too,” “Some marathons end at 6am” and “Sometimes victory is a phone number.” I don't know if my trainer would by the "bacon has electrolytes" but in my opinion it makes complete sense at 4am even as a vegetarian. :)

With an Olympic Gold Medal under her belt, Torah Bright and the Roxy Snow Team are some of snowboarding’s most gifted gals. The fall campaign features Bright’s new Eminence board, which was inspired by the photography of Carlo Van de Roer – who also shot her for the campaign – and a combination of lookbook and action images of team riders Erin Comstock, Lisa Wiik and Sarah Burke shot in Argentina by Matt Georges. I think it's images like these that should encourage designers to take risks!

Professionally Awkward Social Media & How to Avoid It!

My next blog post was going to be on resumes but I have found a topic that I find needs to be urgently addressed. I really hate to say it, but I feel like social media is dooming the next generation in regards to carrying themselves with a high level of professionalism. You can call me uptight or old fashioned, but I think that all professional communications, ESPECIALLY to those you do not know, or know well need to be handled with a standard of care.

Here are my opinions on the matter. And keep in mind, while I feel like most of these can be utilized at all points in ones career, it's specifically for students and young professionals trying to break into the industry. If you've reached out to me ever and committed one of these sins, don't worry. I don't hold terrible judgments. And I'm not perfect either, if the dog picture is REALLY cute, I may break one of my rules. :)

Email
Keep it Proper
Okay. Sounds simple. We all write emails, right?!?! Emails are not text messages. Complete sentences, proper grammar and everything you learned in English class K-12 should be utilized.

Keep it short
No novels. No one wants to read all that. A lot of professionals read emails throughout the day on their mobile devices. If it's long winded it may take longer for that person to get back with you.

Follow up!
If a professional your seeking advice from does not email you back say in 5 business days, send them another email. Most of the time, they sincerely forgot. It's totally cool.

Follow Through!
If you reach out seeking advice FOLLOW THROUGH! I don't know how many portfolio reviews people as for or contacts I make that I never hear from them again. First impressions are important.

LinkedIn

Introduce Yourself!

If you are going to reachout to people you don't know, introduce yourself in the message. Seriously, the generic LinkedIn message does not apply here. Whether your a student, professional or a vendor/rep it does not matter. If I don't know you I am not going to accept. Also, complete sentences and proper grammar are required.

Worthless Connections

If you are blindly reaching out to people on LinkedIn in for connections, don't get that confused with your real network. Your "network" should be a real and important. Just becuase you have a "connection" a Gensler, HOK, Maharam or wherever, if the connections are not real, they don't mean anything. Professionals take their recommendations very seriously. It's a true judgement of our character and values.

Engaged with Professional Organizations

Read the posts. Answer the comments. Have presence. You know the saying that 90% is just showing up? The same goes in the online community. Speak, post content and keep updating your profile. You never know who is reading what.

Facebook
Wait to be Asked
Don't reach out to professionals via facebook unless they invite you to. I personally, like to keep some things a bit more private. While my Twitter is Linked to Facebook, my Facebook posts only go out to friends so I like to keep that boundary. Even though, I would never post something I would not want my colleagues not to see because I assume they can see anything. I just don't think they necessarily need to see fb posts about my "adorable weiner dog" or how I think "Modern family is soooo funny". :)

Keep Your Stuff Private
This can get tricky. But do know, future employees google search you. As soon as I get an email from someone I don't know I do a quick google search and check out some of their online content. It gives me a quick understanding of you, what your about and what you value.

Twitter
Follow & Engage
If you really want to standout, use Twitter to follow your favorite professionals, brands, groups etc. in the design industry. Comment on their tweets, offer your own opinions. See it as an opportunity to learn and stay connected.

Keep it Professional
While tweeting can be casual environment, keep in mind what you post. For example, if I have a picture of my amazing dog I want to share, it happens via Facebook status and not on Twitter as I mentioned above. Consider having two twitter accounts if you want to do both. But there are times to break rules. I do it sometimes. I really really love my dog and Kentucky basketball. :)

Again, if you've committed any of the sins, you have time to recover! Don't let any of the information discourage you! It should empower you to get out there and get engaged!

Cover Letters for Go Getters!

So I may not have had to experience of applying to a lot of different design firms under my belt but as I am coming up on my four year anniversary at Gensler, I think that I've developed a pretty good understanding of the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to apply for a job.

I find that people often are very confused and misguided as to what to put in a cover letter when they are applying for a big firm. Below are the top 10 things I think you need to be aware of when you're writing a cover letter.

1. Don’t worry to much about who to address the letter to. It is not a deal breaker. If you know someone at the firm, and you are giving them your package to hand to someone else, address that individual. If you are applying online to a particular office and you can find an HR contact use that. (And even if you hand your package to someone else you will most likely have to apply online as well. So change your cover letter in that instance to the HR person when you upload.) If you don’t know anyone and can’t figure out the information, then just say “To whom it may concern,” . It’s fine. You have bigger fish to fry in this letter.

2. You should have a different cover letter for each employer. This is not a one size fits all type of deal. While the bones and structure can stay the same, you need to tailor your content for the specific position and firm you are applying for.

3. If you are applying for jobs in cities where you don’t live, express interest in that city through your cover letter. A big firms, we refer to people who apply to all different jobs from all corners of the world as “fishing.” We want someone who wants to work for US. Seriously. We want to know you are invested in learning more about us. It’s a 50-50 relationship.

4. Be specific about WHY you want to work at a specific firm. If you want to work at Gensler, please don't put because we are listed number 1 in the top 100 of Interior Design magazine. Don't repeat statistics back to us. Think about why you really want to work there. Is it the large amount of opportunity within one organization? Do we offer an area of expertise not at other firms? Our research? Tell us your passion and WHY. If it is simply because we're number one,I can honestly say you probably will not be a good culture fit. Everyone at Gensler works hard pursing their passion to keep that #1 status. Look at things like the firms publications. At Gensler, we have all kinds of things we publish on a regular basis so you cover letter can be current, accurate and specific. You can check out the Gensler examples here.

5. Be memorable. While writing, "I have a passion for interior design." may the the truth, spice it up a bit. It's told and tired. Try talking about a speciality, a related degree you may have or a unique study abroad experience.

6. If you have a unique name where someone might not know if you are a boy or a girl, I suggest coming up with a creative way to incorporate it into your cover letter if your concerned about it. You’re resume is not to be confused with the back of a baseball card. We don’t care about your height, weight, or collar size. We also don’t need to see your gender listed. So like I said above, seize that cover letter to tell that story.

7. Personally branding is very important. If you a designer, this should go without saying, but consider it a kind reminder. You're cover letter should look like your resume and portfolio. Same typeface, color, logo, format etc.

8. If you don't know what you want your focus to be in don't worry. It's okay if you have not figured out if retail, workplace, hospitality, consulting, healthcare or whatever else floats your boat. But whatever position your applying for you should have a passion in learning more about it. No one expects junior designers to be experts in anything, so relax. :)

9. Take the opportunity highlight important aspects of your resume. If you are passionate about philanthropy, leadership or a related area of study talk about it! Also, mention your most recent award or something else that is time relevant and exciting. It's a great way to transition them into reading your resume. (Just don't repeat everything that's on there! You have more important this to be doing with this real-estate!)

10. Make sure your include a cover letter to begin with. :) Believe it or not, some people don't feel like the time and effort is necessary. But if you seize the opportunity to discuss yourself and what makes your different, I can assure you it's well worth the time!

Fun Facts on Iconic Pattern, Colors & Branding!

Color and pattern are is simply amazing. Did you know that 60% of a decision to buy a product is based upon color?!?! I wonder if the rate is even higher with these iconic luxury brands.

Here are 5 fun facts about iconic colors, patterns and their brands!

1. The Tiffany Blue color is protected as a color trademark by Tiffany & Co. in some jurisdictions including the U.S.The color is produced as a private custom color by Pantone, with PMS number 1837, the number deriving from the year of Tiffany's foundation. As a trademarked color, it is not publicly available and is not printed in the Pantone Matching System swatch books.

2. The iconic Burberry check was created in the 1920s and used as a lining in its trench coats.In 1914 Burberry was commissioned by the war office to adapt its officer's coat to suit the conditions of contemporary warfare, resulting in the 'trench coat'! After the war, the trench coat became popular with civilians.

3. Christian Louboutin launched his line of high-end women's shoes in France in 1991. Since 1992, his designs have incorporated the shiny, red-lacquered soles that have become his signature. On 27 March 2007, Louboutin filed an application for U.S. trademark protection of this red sole design. In 2011, Christian Louboutin filed a trademark infringement of their red soled shoes against designer Yves Saint Laurent. Louboutin is expecting for the YSL shoe to be revoked and is seeking $1 million in damages.

4. Seeking to camouflage the juice stains, Lilly designed a sleeveless shift dress made of bright, colorful printed cotton. Lilly Pultizer found that customers loved her dress, so she produced more in order to sell them at her juice stand. Eventually, she was selling more dresses than juice, and decided to focus on designing and selling what had become known as her "Lillys". In 1959, Lilly became president of her own company, Lilly Pulitzer, Inc.

5. Missoni is a household name that has reached far beyond the catwalk for many years. But their debut of an inexpensive line at Target has granted everyone access to the iconic brand. (And by everyone I mean those few who either arrived at the store at 6am or one of the many who gathered everything up and stuck it on ebay. But digress....) Did you know the fashion house also has a hotels bearing the name and design!?! Hotel Missoni has creative spaces you have to see to believe! Currently, there are two locations. One in Edinburgh, Scotland and one in Kuwait City, Kuwait. Three more are planned in the next two years.

Remembering and Honoring 9/11- The Power of Brand Identity

I think that brands get a bad wrap sometimes. Many people see brands as big business and about superficial things. Often they are viewed seen are more expensive. We've all heard the term"brand" versus "generic". But I think most people forget that brands don't have to be selling something.

The 9/11 Memorial logo and entire identity package is a representation of this. Landor first started working with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum back in July 2007. They first donated their strategic expertise to the Memorial and Museum, proving that good design does not have to have a high price tag and that profit should not be the only indicator of a companies success.

I think this quote by Alina Wheeler starts to shed light on why logos specifically have such a power over people. "Humanity has always used symbols to express fierce individuality, pride, loyalty and ownership. The power of symbols remains elusive and mysterious-a simple form can instantaneously trigger recall and arouse emotion, whether it is emblazoned on a flag, etched in store, or in the screen of your cell phone."

What ALL symbols and their brands have in common is they are rooted in the idea of promise. They are the big idea that is bigger than ourselves. And on this day, the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2011, the 9/11 Memorial brand identity and everything that goes along with it is a shinning example of how we can utilize design to make sure the events and people and families of 9/11 are always remembered.

As a designer, at the start of each season my mailbox becomes filled with catalogs from mass retailers. While a lot is the same old, it's great to discover hidden gems and trends realized. And now I've done that work for you! Below are my top picks out of the West Elm and CB2 catalogs for this fall!

Sarah Cihat Dinnerware - West Elm (I'm thinking my love for this stems from my time at Keeneland!)

Acrylic Easel Small - CB2 (Great for portfolio reviews of your a student! It comes in large as well!.)

Charlotte Tealight Holder - CB2 (I love things that cast beautiful shadows. It adds texture and depth to rooms.)

Parlour Chair - CB2 (I put this in because of the unique attention paid to upholstery. A designer somewhere put a lot of through into this. I can't believe I am saying this but I would like to see it in more of a neutral palette myself.)

When it comes to my blog that is!

So after a vacay my blog is back! J I’ve been up to a lot lately. Clients like Abercrombie & Fitch have been keeping me on my toes, my new board position with IIDA, and that Braves ticket package along with my new ballet hobby has been keeping me busy!

I have many topics I want to chat about, but believe it or not, it’s SHOES which once and for all have inspired me to come back to the table. Carey Bradshaw and Nicole Cartier should be proud!

Loafers. Yes, loafers. I love them but have yet to find a pair I can afford. Check out these designer pairs which I think sum up some of the biggest trends for this fall.

BRIGHT Jewel Tones. Not the muddy ones of the past. The economy is looking brighter and so are our fashions ladies and gents!

Nude Shoes Continue Through Fall. We all traded out white sandals for nude ones in efforts to make our legs longer and keep up with the latest trends. Metallics- Shiny things are always in:) Especially on your feet this fall. I love taking something classic like the loafer and giving it new life like this! If they were not over $600 I would surely be running through the office in these!

Where I've Been This Past Month!

My semester of grad school ends at midnight tonight! Wahoo!!!

I've been working on a TON of stuff this past month, but here is my proudest accomplishment. My first origional typeface design! Designing a typeface is on my top ten things I want to do before I die. It's a good feeling to scratch that off my list even though I think this was just the first!

Why I < 3...DanceBlue!

So tomorrow is hands down my favorite day of the year. Forget Christmas, forget birthdays and believe it or not even after 64 front row games straight in Rupp. NOTHING compares to DanceBlue.

At 8pm tomorrow night til 8pm on Saturday it's all about the dancers and the kids. As it should be. But right now I want to explain why DanceBlue is SO incredibly important to myself and so many others behind the scenes...

The leadership experience reminds me of the NCAA student athlete commercials when they say, “Almost all of us go pro in something other than sports.” The same goes for DanceBlue. The past and current leadership teams of DanceBlue will most likely go on to careers not in philanthropy and pediatric cancer. (Unless you're my heroes like Dave and Shelby:) We are lawyers, politicians, social workers, financial analysts, teachers, nurses, executive assistants and A designer :) But when you get us all into a room, we are a group of the hardest working people we all know with a passion for doing things right and the best. That's what DanceBlue is all about. Doing RIGHT by these kids and families when they need our help the most and stopping at NOTHING to make sure we do our BEST to raise as much money, support and awareness as possible.

So with that here are the top 5 reasons why DanceBlue is so special to me.

5. True Teamwork

It’s an organization that demonstrates that people can really make a difference and that we do our best work in teams. Even from our humble beginning of 180 dancers it took a team (a much smaller team:) but a team none the less! This has been a once and a lifetime opportunity for our leadership team to bond and write the next chapter of history in DanceBlue. It's rare to find so may passionate and loving people who share the same vision with 150% commitment. Embrace it and share it!

4. "Can Do" Attitude

So I can't remember if it was last year or the year before, but as I walked onto campus for the first time headed to DanceBlue I was overwhelmed instantly with tears at the sight of DanceBlue signs on the light posts. A bit dramatic maybe, but in year one and two, that was still too expensive our our lil'pockets! Now we have Coach Cal tweeting about DB, ribbons showing up at basketball games and mini dance marathons all around town! Now it takes a great university to support all these efforts but it also takes leaders with visions of the future and future leaders to make those visions a reality!

3. Legacy

My sophomore year at Kentucky I was asked by an advisor what my legacy would be at the University of Kentucky. I thought at first that meant I had to do something amazing so people would remember my name. But through DanceBlue I learned that my name wasn't all that important. It was passing on what me and our team believed in so much. Our legacy was about making a lasting impact long after we graduated. Our legacy is DanceBlue and I could not be any prouder.

2. The Advisors

To be a collegiate advisor I think is one of the most selfless acts. Let’s be honest, the people you are dealing with on a daily basis are all students who want nothing more than to be and do their best. Most over programmed college students thrive on having their ideas heard and supported. You all take a back seat, guiding us when required or asked and serving as our mentors. We have had all the right mentors at all the right times with DanceBlue. I am so thankful to each and everyone of you. Especially to Jennifer Mynear. We all have our own experiences and different reasons why we DanceBlue, but Jennifer had the vision to rally our experiences together and remind us that we don't have to take this sitting down. We need to stand up and fight for our kids.

And that brings me to #1...

DanceBlue is about taking care of our own kids on our own campus who need our help. They bleed blue just like us and they have the right to grown up and attend the university they choose when they are our age.

When I would visit the clinics before studio on Tuesday and Thursdays I was so surprised to find they were the most positive people I would meet throughout my day. It gave me amazing perspective . The kids taught me not to sweat the small stuff and I had a constant reminder that I was working hard for them. I will always and forever be about the kids.

And I sign off wishing nothing but the best of luck to the 2011 leadership team and their committee members! Thank you to EVERYONE who is helping out this year and I can't wait to see and meet all of you this weekend!

Nice work Mr. Trump! The Trump Organization hired Mary Cook & Associates to design five condos that boast amazing views of Chicago in hopes to inspire potential buyers to take the plunge!

Overall they are 5 distinctive feels that I think are well done but still don't do that building justice in my humble opinion. And of course, I would like a shot to do them better. :) I dream of the day when he says, "You're Hired!" :)

If You Don't Think This is OOC...Advertisements

Two very awesome but very different advertisement campaigns have caught my eye as I have been completing research for my next grad school project so I thought I would share!

TARGET is known for creating and maintaining a kick ass brand. They have become known as a place to go for accessible design. "Design For All" as they say. They're held to higher design standard than Wal-Mart and other competitors as thus their ads need to push boundaries and engage the consumer. In Times Square, the billboards became interactive where viewers text Target to find out the Top 10 instead of just reading it on the billboard.

It's also worth noting that I alone have not discovered this awesomeness. This campaign is a winner of the AIGA 365 Award. (A coveted award from the American Institute of Graphic Artists in which yours truly is a proud member:)

IKEA I can't lie, I didn't believe it at first. These look way more like photos from Anthropologie than Ikea. And that my friends of course is the point! :) Ikea is well aware that to a trained eye, someone can spot an Ikea room from 20 feet away. So, to that point here are two tips to make your Ikea home not so Ikea! :)

First off, notice that Lack is not where to be found in these ads (If you don't know what this is look at the bookshelf you bought from Ikea. Odds are 10:1 that it's part of the Lack line). And second, there are a VERY limited amount of patterned Ikea textiles shown. Nothing says cheap quicker than Ikea patterned textiles in bulk! Have fun shopping!!! :)

A. Reconsider you're career as a designer.

B. Consider hiring a designer because you have no taste.

C. Hanging out with me more so you can be exposed to more awesome things to develop your palette.:)

D. Follow my blog religiously and take all of my posts as gospel.

When I see this, I get as excited as a kid on Christmas morning. Quite possibly pathetic to most, but a true reminder of why I LOVE what I do. This is one of those dream projects. Great architecture inspiring great branding. The pictures and website speak for themselves.

Wow! This piece sparked a 30 minute conversation in my house between Troy and I one night. This piece is so much more than the overused word 'juxaposition'. It's really amazing.

An oldie but a goodie. I like sophisticated whimsical elements in spaces. You should never take yourself too seriously but the Mooi lamp shows us that sometimes you can have a a sense of humor about your design work as well.

First Week In February! Top 5!

So as any blogger will tell you, a blog takes time! The length of time each post takes obviously varies quite a bit, the next one for Spring/Summer 2012 Manifesto has tied but me quite a bit but I've taken a break to share my week!

This week has been has been a bit heavy hence my lack of entries. Between what feels like working on let's just say the 'less than ideal hospitality project', taking charge of my career and where I want to go, grad school deadlines, missing out on hearing one of my most respected colleagues speak and working through week 2 of my best friend/roommate/handy man leaving me for Gensler NY and KY basketball, being less than purrrfect, things have been a challenge.

But let's be straight, I say all of this not to bitch. Honestly. It's just to prove the point that we all have out own stuff going on and different challenges each day. So even on the outside if it looks like someone has all the bells and whistles we've all got stuff going on!

But here are my top 5 highlights that kept me either away from my blog or served as my fuel for the week!

1. Building my desk and pedestal from IKEA in preparation for my iMAC. I did it all by myself :)

2. This photo I got via text with the caption"I didn't know you become super gay if your about to get hit by a car." I laughed the hardest I have all week! (Men of my gay pose, you know who you are, and you know this is funny. No hate mail please. :)

3. Kelley Bozeman, the director of marketing at the University of Kentucky made my day twice! First by asking me if I would like to be profiled in the 2012 Prospective Student marketing campaign and then added that DanceBlue has announced they reached capacity of dancers on the floor. I still get all choked up just thinking about how proud I am of DB!! And very flattered! Thanks Kelley! :)

4. My Xmas/"I'm sorry I'm moving and not able to bring you Starbucks in bed on the weekends anymore." present from Troy. It has made 3am nights and 7:30am wake ups slightly easier...

5. And finally finishing my Project B for Typography I. A redesign of the book cover "The Fountainhead." It's a hardcover wrap so image it wrapping a book. I'll post more pics at a later date! :)

PS If you knew this all already, I'm sorry. One of my biggest pet peeves is people repeating themselves! :)

Advice From Those Wiser Than Me...Stay Up Late!

At 25 I've found that finding time for work, grad school, friends, family, my dog and whatever other crazy idea I get into my head is at times overwhelming. People often say to me "how do you do it?" or "I couldn't do it."

We'll I'm hear to tell you that I while I get it all done, it's not in the most eloquent fashion. I'm a big time multitasker who pushes the limits of time and is easily distracted in my own home by "more pressing issues" like Kentucky basketball and by some new issue of the 10 magazines I get.

But I do get it done. And this is the secret...staying up late! Staying up late does not end with your undergraduate degree. And it shouldn't. Getting ahead is about working harder than anyone else you know. If you want to be average then it's all good. Go to bed at 10. But if you want to be great, stay up late! It's like of like one of personal trainers, Corey Ritter says, "Normal people get normal results. Crazy people get crazy results." Be crazy!!!

If you don't want to listen to me on this matter, listen to Michael Bierut, a partner at Pentagram Design in New York. Obviously he knows a lot more than I do about the payoff on this topic. :)

Stay Up Late

One week after I graduated from college in Ohio, I moved to New York with my new wife Dorothy and began working as a design assistant at Vignelli Associates. It was 1980, and I was the lowest employee on the totem pole. Working in a design office in those days was different. I never touched a computer. As I recall, the office didn't even have a computer. In fact, we didn't have a fax machine.

I spent most of my days putting thinner in rubber cement and taping tissue paper over mechanical boards. Every once in a while I would get to do a mechanical myself, usually following the direction of one of the more experienced designers. I was working in New York City for a designer I idolized and I was the happiest person on earth. It so happened that we got an apartment that was three blocks-literally, a 135 second walk-from the Vignelli office. Work started at 9:30 a.m. I usually got up at around five minutes to 9 and still had time to pick up a doughnut on my way in.

Dorothy, on the other hand, had a corporate job downtown, in the World Trade Center to be precise. She had to wake up before 6 to be at work at 8. I literally slept three hours later than her every morning. Every night Dorothy would go to bed at around 10 p.m. I was still wide awake, and our apartment was so small it drove me crazy. I had a key to the office. So I got in the habit of tucking my wife in every night and going back to work to start another shift, which often would last from 10 to 3 in the morning.

This went on for four years. Anything I've achieved in my career I credit today to those four years. I loved working late at night. I worked on office stuff, and I worked on personal projects. I played music really loud and drank Mountain Dew. I would design anything: invitations for my friends' parties, packaging for mix tapes, one-of-a-kind birthday cards, and freebies for non-profits.

When Massimo Vignelli noticed I had extra time during the day, he started giving me extra work. Things that would have taken two days only took one, thanks to the night shift. The more work I did, the faster I got, and the better I got. It never occurred to me to ask for overtime. 25 years later, nearing 50 with three kids (and the same wife), I can't tell you the last time I was awake at 3 in the morning, intentionally, at least. So my advice to anyone starting a career as a designer? Stay up late while you can. It pays off.

Why I < 3...Lacquered Walls!

Like Ballpoint Pen motifs were a preview to the design trend analogue, lacquered walls are a preview to the next design trend for S/S 2012 Manifesto.

This trend is not DIY kiddos. Lacquered walls are high price but an even high reward. But don't fret that's why we have painting professionals to help us with amazing endeavors such as these. :)

I personally can't get over the black lacquer! WOW! It also happens to frame out an amazing photo of the ocean touching the sky. An amazing piece by Chip Hopper. (A future inspirational blog entry FYI...:)

Lacquered walls follow my design philosophy that simple is not always better. Sometimes I feel like designers fall on simplicity as a cop out. They fail to explore interesting solutions and push the envelope. My personal design aesthetic is all about layers and contrast. This can take on many meanings between contrasting materials, layering prints and color among other things.

I challenge you to push your own comfort zone. Pair a print and a stripe. Add color to your neutral bedroom. Or just do something out of the ordinary. Life is too amazing to remain simple and boring. :)

S/S 2012 Trends Part 1: Analogue

ANALOGUE is by definition a trend that has a unified strong voice. All of the pieces weave together like a beautiful fabric. While you may not notice every tread, they come together to create an an innovative new look.

Solid, strong, timeless and simple. Premondinatly classic grey neutrals blend earthy browns play to the low design theme of the trend overall. The three main accents are Yves Klein blue, juniper  green and my personal favorite Hermès orange! They serve as high design colors, completing this  palette with clarity and sophistication.

I've broken down for you the FOUR BIG IDEAS for analogue so you can hit the stores wide eyed and excited and find those pieces that will really make you stand out!

ANALOGUE IS OLD YET NEW:

Remember how much you wanted a Zac Morris's mobile phone? Or loved watching the oxen roll across the Oregon Trail on your Apple computer in grade school?? But don't worry, you won't have to trade in your iphone to rock out first generation technology. Pixelated motifs are inspired by older computers on everything from sportswear to dinnerware.

Even typewriters will get in on the action. Classic serif letters outlined with circles in their traditional black, but I would not be suprised to see navy, tan and other unique combinations as well. All of this retro will also inspire the return of geek. But this time, geeks are chic. Natural materials like cotton and leather are create the foundation for modest pieces that inspire creativity rather than suck the life out of you like studying. :)

ANALOGUE IS UTILITARIAN CHIC:

Who said it's either form our function? Utilitarian has become chic just like the geeks! Furniture pieces with lots of doors, coats with lots of pockets and purses with a zipper to store everything! It's highly functional AND highly desirable.

Also, as the economy slowly recovers, this trend has really taken the everyday essential pieces by hostage. Looks for necessary items becoming extrodinary. It's here you'll find glimmers of shimmer. Gold paper clips and simple construction details made much more chic then utilitarian.

ANALOGUE IS ANDROGYNOUS:

Is that a male or a female??? Analogue likes to blur the lines and confuse. It won't even give you a name as a hint. One of the characteristics of this trend is the lack of branding. Rest assured this is a Ed Hardy free t-shirt zone kids!

Upgrade your t-shrit to true casual luxary. Linens are an obvious choice for anyone since they can go both ways. And yes, I do mean in the bedroom! This gender neutral zone is sophisticated and livable without being stuffy and 'perfect'.

ANALOGUE IS ANTIPLASTIC (And quite possibly my favorite trend characteristic!)
  
This  trend proves that thinking green is here to stay. In lieu of plastic  new materials have taken center stage in fashion and interiors. Thick,  ultra-soft yards from a variety of sources run wild over a variety of  styles and applications. These are not your grandmothers knit booties!  Experimental constructions are already starting to yield some unique and  captivating graphic motifs. I mean, this knit bench?!? OMG! Color, scale and those sexy danish legs! I can't wait for that to be in my condo!

Felt and leather flourish in within analogue as well. And while both are all over fashion it's really the interiors applications that they stand out. Using leather on new surfaces and felt to not only upholster but to mold and create innovative shapes is exciting! I can't wait to see how ANALOGUE takes over 2012!

Countdown to the FIRST FORECASTING POST!

Since my first official FORECASTING BLOG is going to hit the web in a matter of minutes I wanted to share some mini insight for those readers who are not plugged into the design world. (And thank goodness there are more people reading my blog than there are followers according to the stats! But before you read anymore please FOLLOW ME:) No annoying emails or updates. It's basically like being a fan on facebook. :)

But onto forecasting!

Trend forecasting is all about looking at the world as holistically as possible to extract the next big thing in the design world. Design is everywhere all around you. Have you ever thought about why something is a certain color, shape or even size? It's all about forecasting trends. Designers and retailers want to know 'what's next' and pay big bucks for people to search though thousands of runways shows, trade fairs, exhibitions, lectures...the list goes on and on...

My goal to bring to you each season is a look into the next hot thing BEFORE or JUST AS it hits stores. I want to share the trend, explore it and then document it as it grows or let's be honest sometimes fails. Not everything you see will be a bestseller. But more important not every trend or style is for everyone. Even in a single season you'll see radical differences and often contradictions. My advice is to go with your gut and use the information and inspiration to DESIGN YOUR OWN LIFE as you see fit!!

We've all 'doodled' in class. Some of us are more talented than others. :) I find myself experimenting with typography more than objects. In fact, I have awesome cursive writing due to my indepth experimentation during college prep chem. Sorry Mrs. Lichatz...

Anyways, it's about time some of the more talent 'doodlers' get noticed. And I have no doubt that IKEA will be cooking up the ballpoint pen motif faster than they can cook their Swedish meatballs.

It's androgynous, flexible with content and the substrates are limitless! T-Shirts, throw pillows, artwork, furniture are just a few! Keep an eye out for it and let me know if you see ballpoint motifs in a store near you!!! :)

A New Blog & Website

Well it’s certainly not complete, but it’s up and running!

This entire process has been a long time coming. One of the greatest misconceptions about graphic designers is that we are all web designers. I’m here to tell you that is not the case. But I have no worries that just as my ideas become more developed so will my CS5 skill set as well.

I have chosen this platform because I’m a multidisciplinary multitasker with a lot to say. I’m also a perfectionist when it comes to my presentation to the world. Live, work or play I always try my best to be on point. This blog is as much therapy for me as it is a platform and resource.

I’ve been extremely blessed thus far in my life and want to share not only my inspirations with the world but the advice and wisdom that has been given to me. I hope that you enjoy reading my posts and choose to become an active participant!
